INFOGRAPHIC: Understanding Snoring and Sleep Apnea

“What causes snoring?” “How can I stop snoring?” “Is snoring genetic?”...  There are endless questions when it comes to this common issue -  in fact, if you search the word ‘snoring’ online, a whopping 96 million results¹ pop up.  Another staggering stat is that snoring affects about 56% of the global population.

It’s safe to say that if you have concerns about your snoring, you’re not alone!  But let’s go back a step, and understand what it actually is and what brings it about.

DID YOU KNOW snoring inforgraphic

What Is Snoring?

Snoring occurs when the soft tissue in your upper airway (the tongue, uvula, soft palate and pharyngeal walls) relax, partially blocking the air passage.  Snoring is the sound of the soft tissues fluttering while air is drawn past them.

Snoring can vary in intensity, from mild and occasional to loud and persistent.  Several factors can contribute to snoring, including smoking, alcohol consumption, nasal congestion, and medication.

While snoring is often considered a common annoyance, there are plenty of reasons why it  should be taken seriously.

What Impact Does Snoring Have On Your Life?

Snoring might seem harmless, but it can lead to some serious issues in the long-term.

Snoring can put a huge strain on your relationships.  Loud snoring can disturb your partner’s sleep leading to increased frustration.  This often brings about separate sleeping arrangements.  Serious snoring can even lead to the hearing impairment of your partner².

When it comes to your own sleep quality, persistent snoring can lead to a chronic lack of restorative sleep which can contribute to poor concentration, decreased productivity, and even accidents or injuries due to reduced alertness.

Over time, on-going snoring can also contribute to more serious health concerns like hypertension and heart problems.

How Is Snoring Connected To Sleep Apnea?

Although snoring is common -  with 2 billion¹ (!) people snoring worldwide -  it is NOT normal.  Snoring is literally the sound of air being dragged into the lungs through an impaired airway -- and that is never a good thing.

After all, if you saw someone wide awake and snoring, would you think it normal?  Or would you be alarmed about the way they are breathing and call for help?  If disordered breathing is not good while awake, it can only be worse while you’re asleep, so why do we tolerate it?

Especially when snoring can be a sign of a serious underlying sleep-related breathing disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Obstructive sleep apnea is where the airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep, causing recurring pauses in breathing.  OSA leads to a host of negative impacts  on your well-being and overall health, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Weight gain
  • Reduced libido
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Waking tired and excessive daytime sleepiness (to name a few) .

Plus, new research definitely found that  people with sleep apnea are five times more likely to develop heart disease, and 60% more likely to experience a stroke³.
