Clinical sleep studies require a patient to travel to and sleep overnight in a hospital bed during their study.
A professional technician will monitor your levels while you sleep, guaranteeing your sleep data is recorded correctly.
Once you are ready for bed, the technician will connect the sleep unit using small adhesive electrodes. This is not an invasive process. An infrared camera records unusual body motion while you sleep.
When ready, the technician will start monitoring you from a separate room. They'll speak to you through an intercom to go through some tests to adjust the unit before you drift off to sleep.
You might be worried that all the accessories will disrupt your sleep, however many people sleep as they generally would. Even if you do not sleep well, a hospital sleep study usually provides adequate information to identify sleep apnea.
The technician will remove the recording unit the following day. The hospital usually has restroom facilities where you can shower before you leave the hospital.
Your GP will receive your sleep study results, and call you when it's time to discuss your treatment options.
A hospital sleep study is appropriate for patients with complex sleep problems or who are physically impaired but who don't need a sleep study performed immediately. Waiting lists can vary between six months to several years.
