Sleep Clinic New South Wales
Home Sleep Studies Now Available across New South Wales
A diagnostic sleep study (polysomnogram) is a prerequisite for the professional treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea. And now, it's more convenient, comfortable and less expensive than ever before for those sufferers living across New South wales.
Up until recently, a professional diagnostic sleep study in New South Wales could only be performed in a sleep clinic or hospital-based 'attended' setting, where a sleep technician would setup the recording equipment and monitor you during the night. Not surprisingly, most people find it difficult to experience a 'typical' night's sleep in these sterile sleep clinic environments due to foreign sounds, smells, noises, pillows, mattress, etc ... Therefore compromising diagnostic results and leaving you out-of-pocket and untreated.
This is especially problematic for those living in regional or remote areas of New South Wales where there is no readily available sleep clinic to provide full Medicare-rebated polysomnograms (diagnostic sleep studies). This means a patient suffering from sleep disorders must wait for an occasional visit from a sleep study provider, or travel to the nearest major regional centre where facilities exist. Apart from the costs associated with such travel, the long distance trip (if by road) is in itself, a risky and dangerous necessity for sleep disorder sufferers.
Sleep Clinic Services now provide professionally recognised, Medicare rebated, home sleep studies across New South Wales. New portable diagnostic technology (worn while you sleep) allows you to undergo a professional 'unattended' home sleep study, in the comfort, privacy, and convenience of your own bedroom.
An in-home sleep study with Sleep Clinic Services is a full diagnostic study, not just a screening device which is not recognised by Sleep Physicians nor paid for by Medicare. The diagnostic technology records a wide range of sleep factors, including:
- Heart activity
- Brain Activity
- Blood oxygen levels
- Breathing patterns
- Number of stoppages
- Sleeping positions
- Limb movements, and much more ...
This advanced approach provides a more accurate assessment of your potential sleep disordered breathing condition, regardless of where you live in New South Wales, ensuring you are accurately diagnosed while avoiding lengthy hospital waiting lists, travel time, and associated expenses such as petrol, road tolls, and parking.
As a patient of Sleep Clinic Services, you do not need to visit a hospital or sleep clinic to have the diagnostic sleep unit fitted. Instead, your sleep study unit will be delivered to you. Prior to this, you will need a referral from your GP to qualify for a Medicare rebate. (Download a Sleep Study Referral Form).
You will also be assigned a personal Sleep Therapist who will support and guide you through your entire sleep study process.
Your Sleep Therapist is also responsible for getting your diagnostic sleep study equipment to you and then ensuring the equipment is fitted correctly so your data is properly recorded. The following morning, the recorded data will be downloaded and sent to a team of qualified sleep scientists and specialist sleep physicians for analysis. This analysis will identify the exact nature and severity of any sleep disordered breathing condition you might have - ensuring a proper prescription for an appropriate treatment can be made.
If required, some of these treatments can also be provided in the comfort, convenience and privacy of your home - at a time that suits you.
The full cost of your diagnostic sleep study is covered by Medicare. Your only out-of-pocket expense is for the clinical preparation fee, which covers:
- Refurbishment of diagnostic equipment
- Replacement of ‘consumables’ such as tubes, nasal cannulas, etc
- Technical configuration of equipment for your personal sleep study
- Delivery costs to and from your residence (other in-home providers require you travel to them for fitting)
- Sleep data download and analysis by a professional Sleep Physician (other's require you visit and pay Sleep Physician costs,) and
- A one-on-one telephone consultation with your Sleep Therapist at a time convenient to you (after hours if necessary) who will explain your results and help you understand the Sleep Physician's recommendations while answering any questions you may have.
Apart from the obvious convenience of having the study done at home instead of in a sleep clinic, this clinical preparation fee is often also significantly cheaper than the costs associated with doing the study overnight in a sleep clinic or hospital ward.
