What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a harmful medical condition characterised by repeated breathing stoppages during sleep. These breathing stoppages, known as 'apneic events' typically last between 10 to 30 seconds but severe events can last two minutes or longer. 

Apneic events can occur hundreds of times each night, completely disrupting the sufferer's sleep patterns.  This inevitably impacts negatively on health, wellbeing and relationships.    

There are three types of sleep apnea:

  • obstructive sleep apnea (OSA),
  • central sleep apnea (CSA), and
  • complex sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the soft tissue of the upper airway collapses into the airway, literally obstructing airflow. 

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is a neurological condition, where the brain fails to generate the normal urge to breathe. 

Complex sleep apnea is when the sufferer has both these conditions.

Sleep apnea affects 1 in 5 Australian adults, with approximately 80% of sufferers unaware they have a potentially dangerous medical condition. They therefore remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Apneic events occur during sleep, so the sufferer has no awareness or control.  It is usually the sufferers' bed partner or family members who first witness sleep apnea symptoms such as loud snoring or brief cessations of breathing, without realising the inherent danger.

Some common sleep apnea symptoms include:

  • Loud snoring most nights (if not all)
  • Waking up tired
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Poor memory and concentration 
  • ​Weight gain / slow metabolism
  • ​Multiple nighttime bathroom visits
  • ​Low libido or erectile dysfunction
  • Teeth grinding
  • ​Chronic acid reflux
  • ​Waking up choking or gasping

Untreated, sleep apnea can lead to severe health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis of sleep apnea is a vital step toward effective treatment, so it's essential to get it right. The appropriate diagnostic method for you depends on your circumstances.

Typical sleep apnea diagnosis methods include:

Offline Tests for Apnea:
Simple screening tests are a good starting point when first investigating potential apnea.  You can ask during a GP appointment and your doctor can assess you, or your tests can be done by phone with one of our friendly Care Coordinators, no cost or obligation, or you can use our unique, scientifically validated Sleep Apnea Risk Test.

Multi-Channel Screening:
Multichannel screening (MCS) methods are appropriate if you simply want to confirm whether or not you have sleep apnea.   These types of tests are readily available online and through many pharmacies.

MCS can confirm the existence of sleep apnea, but it does not provide the data necessary to diagnose the exact nature and severity of sleep apnea.  As such, this method is not recognised by Medicare and does not attract a Government rebate.  

Sleep Study (Polysomnogram):
A true diagnostic sleep study can determine the presence, cause and severity of a sleep apnea condition.  This results in the best treatment recommendations.

True diagnostic sleep studies are approved by Medicare and attract a generous rebate for those who are eligible.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Your sleep apnea treatment options vary depending on your sleep apnea diagnostic results.  The type, nature and severity of your apnea will determine which treatment option will be most effective for you.

Your treatment plan might include any or all of the following:

  • Lifestyle changes.  Different routines and weight loss can help reduce apnea.
  • Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT).  A dental splint can be used to hold the lower jaw and connected tissue clear of the ariway.
  • Airway Pressurisation (AP).  Pressurised air prevents soft tissue from collapsinng into the airway.
  • Ears Nose Throat Surgery (ENT).  Reduction or removal of excess or deformed tissue in the oral or nasal airways can improve airflow.
