CPAP And Male Sexual Function

Thu, Jun 14, 2012

A recent study from Walter Reed Medical Center in the United States has found a strong link between treatment of sleep apnea and improved sexual function.

According to the study, men under age 60 who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) but get CPAP (constant positive airway pressure) treatment are seeing another benefit from the therapy.

The study assessed the erectile function and libido of 92 men who were newly diagnosed with OSA and starting CPAP therapy.   Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in OSA patients, and nearly half of the men in the Walter Reed study reported the presence of ED. Patients were assessed again after one, three and six months of CPAP therapy.

The results show that CPAP improved the sexual function and satisfaction in the majority of men in the study regardless of their level of erectile function reported at the start. Those with ED had more robust improvements and even many without ED reported improved sexual function and satisfaction.

Just one more good reason for sleep apnea sufferers to seek treatment.  If you snore (which is a ‘sleep disordered breathing’ condition itself and a common symptom of underlying sleep apnea) and wake feeling tired (another common symptom of sleep apnea) call 1300 246 637 to have a free, no-obligation chat with a friendly sleep therapist, or contact us via email and we’ll be in touch.
